In September of 2017 we held our first ever Petals and Plates dinner at Rosa Flora in Dunnville. Needless to say, it was a night to remember (check out the video!). The facility is stunning, and the owners Josh Bulk, Ralph Deboer and Arielle Deboer were such gracious hosts, we decided to go back to to where it all started! Join us for an evening you’ll never forget.
The “Pride in Every Petal” Story
Rosa Flora was established in 1978 by Otto and Corine Bulk. The greenhouse first grew only fresh cut hybrid tea roses. Soon, demand grew due to their attention to outstanding quality and prompt service, partnered with honest business practices. Today, the expert team at Rosa Flora now grows large gerbera, mini gerbera, snapdragons, lisianthus, and stephanotis under millions of square feet of high-tech greenhouses. While the business has passed from one generation to the next, as family and business partners, they remain committed to the Christian business practices that have made them the largest greenhouse cut flower operation in Canada today.
Rosa Flora’s success can be attributed to their “Pride in Every Petal” philosophy:
“Our deeply held conviction is that flowers add a rich delight to life. Since 1978 we are blessed to be able to share this delight with you. We have 1.5 million square feet of greenhouses and growing, a fleet of 18 refrigerated trucks, and a cooler of over 35,000 square feet. Put those facts together and you have a winning equation. Three aspects are key: devotion to service, commitment to quality, and support for our environment. These pillars are the basis for Rosa Flora’s Pride in Every Petal.”
The Petals and Plates Experience
Petals and Plates is a series of flower-focused farm dinners that highlight Canadian flower growers and their importance in our agricultural landscape. By combining local food, beer and wine, local floral designers and chefs, these dinners are an exciting, must-attend celebration of the diverse bounty that our local communities have to offer.
Upon arrival, guests will be treated to a cocktail and appetizer hour, including live music. This will be followed by a guided tour of the greenhouse facilities by the owners, who will provide unique insight into what it’s like to be one of North America’s largest cut flower growers. Following the tours, guests will be seated at a beautifully decorated 100-seat harvest table, and treated to an expertly crafted 4-course meal, using locally sourced ingredients to bring world class dishes to life. Enjoy live instrumentals while you eat, drink, and chat with fellow flower lovers around you. The night will conclude around 8:30-9:00pm, and you’ll receive a take home goodie bag and a floral gift from the grower.
There is no strict dress code, but guests are invited to dress “casual dressy”. This event is being held inside of an active greenhouse and temperatures should be fairly comfortable, but it is suggested guests bring a sweater or jacket as the temperatures can drop after sunset. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended as each dinner includes a walking tour of the greenhouse that involves 20-30 minutes of slow paced walking.
